Aung KO, Nge LAY

Mchas Teuk Mchas Dei (Master of Lands and Waters)

by Sa Sa Art Projects

The exhibition is part of a three-component project called Dar Lean, a traditional Cambodian ceremony after the harvest in which farmers 1) pay respect to the lands, resources, and spirits, 2) exchange their experiences gained from the past season, and 3) celebrate.

Mchas Teuk Mchas Dei asks who the masters and caretakers of the lands and waters are. Are they humans, animals, plants, spirits, states, or citizens? Through the works in various media and forms, the exhibition brings to the fore the interaction and complex relationships between nature and the supernatural, humans and non-humans, the tangible and the intangible, the citizens and the states, which continue to shape the economies, cultures, traditions, livelihoods, and essentially socio-political structures in Southeast Asia.

Mchas Teuk Mchas Dei presents recent works by Cambodian Sa Sa Art Projects co-founders—Khvay Samnang, Lim Sokchanlina, and Vuth Lyno—and friends: Aung Ko and Nge Lay (Myanmar), Leang Seckon (Cambodia), Ngoc Nau (Vietnam), and Sutthirat Supaparinya (Thailand).
